Whether you have a Boss from Hell or a Boss made in Heaven, we don’t get to choose our boss. They choose us.  The selection process is determined by the type of Boss you find,  and the type of employee the Boss wants. Which ultimately points out whether he/she wants a pushover, strong and independent, easy to reprimand, or a diy employee. As a female boss, many of my female employees were under the impression that I would be the dragon lady. To one or two I probably was. Apart from the generalised stamp, my staff members came to realise…

Looking back on goals I set for 2018, I did pretty well in achieving them, but it wasn’t so much setting goals than the steps taken to achieve them. Here’s how that rolled out: Create a Modest Fashion Retail space.  Brought an International Fashion Brand to South Africa and set them up for retail at the Artem Gallery. Brought the Council of Modest Fashion to South Africa. Together with the COMFAfrica team hosted a Modest Fashion Conference and Exhibition, and soon after, set up the Africa Modest Fashion Collective PopUp store at Kenilworth Centre. Set out to study a Honours…

The year started as every other does; a suitcase of routine and dreams:  meet the teachers, cover school books, last minute back to school shopping, and an eagerness to take on the new year. My eagerness got the better of me; I enrolled and applied for an Honours degree rather late in the first term, applied to stand on the SGB at my sons school, applied to stand as Class Representative for my daughters school, and accepted invitations to attend fashion industry events on behalf of my company Style Africa. My initial plan for 2018 was as follows Make time for…

ç At the age of 19, I recall my cv being read out during a Humanology course. The lecturer pointed out that; “This young lady has done more in her life than a 40-year-old.”  Now that I am 40 I’ve had to summarise and leave things off my cv by highlighting what is relevant to the purpose it is required for. I feel 22, (sometimes act like it too).  I’ve never lived up to stereotypes – always created my own paths when I couldn’t find one that suited my needs or what I envisioned for myself. This makes me stubborn…

Ever feel like you’re in a slum and can’t seem to get out of it.  Procrastinating rather than focusing on what requires urgent attention.  Well…. Let me tell you… you probably just lost your mojo. Mojo is that thing that keeps you hyped up, gets you interested in what you’re doing and expands your ability to produce great work.  Defined in the dictionary as : good luck, charm or skill that seems to come from something magical or supernatural. Whether on the sports field, at work, or at home, whatever requires your full attention, requires your mojo to be activated. It’s…

We are too critical of ourselves when we look in the mirror. Why do we look in the mirror?  To see if we are pulled together properely? To see if the image before us is what we want to present to the world? What if we don’t like what we see?  How can we change how we see ourselves? Allow me to introduce you to the 3C’s; colour, confidence, comfort. The 3C’s that affect the way we see and feel about ourselves and the way in which we see and feel about the world around us.   CONFIDENCE Confidence is…

As cooler days and the much needed rain has blessed us with its presence, the only cold I can’t seem to shrug off, is that of people who don’t acknowledge others. Too many a times have I personally experienced a lack of THANK YOU’s and even subtle recognition for pointing people in the right direction or making introductions that would lead to someones growth and success. It takes a while to recover from the knife wound, but all things heal in time and like a naive 16 year old, I’ll be back at it trying to sell the creative talent…

Pick up the brushes and paint your life. Add as many colours to enhance every facet of your being. We can choose to live the mundane, routine, and expected life or experience the reality of our dreams, uncovering much about ourselves and our place in the world. May we never stop dreaming. I cannot be boxed I cannot succumb to a stereotype or an expectation that someone else has of me. My freedom to think, to be, to experience life through me has to be a valid need. I cannot feel trapped, thinking my fate lies in someone else’s hands….

“You have to take risks. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen” Paulo Coelho There’s more to life than just chasing your career, your next pay cheque, the love of your life, or the friends and company you desire? It is the essence of our being and what it radiates or permeates unto others and what we gain in the process of life, that represent what we are to do and who we are to be, in this world. Each and every milestone of our life, is not measured by the…

Happy New Year!  The beginning of the year always gives us a sense of a new beginning, a clean slate, a fresh start, an opportunity to make changes, when it really is…. just a continuation of the year before and the year before that ~ Our life measured in years ~ Let’s look back on those resolutions written down in 2017.  You may have found yourself completing none, achieving little, or forgetting them all together.  Kudos to those who got through their resolutions successfully.  For those who still battle to get through their resolutions -this time round – instead of…

Power naps, gym, reading a book, coffee with friends, timeout at a spa….. Between your hustle and bustle – TAKE A BREAK, if not for a week then for 5mins. YOU DESERVE IT! How many times have you pushed yourself to exhaustion, until you cannot think straight anymore?  All this over-working only runs you down, leaving you open to falling sick.  Here’s what prompted me to take a break and literally shutdown the intense need to STAY BUSY!   JUST THE OTHER NIGHT I forced myself to continue working, my head hurt, my eyes began to strain and my brain…

How many times have you thought of something in the hopes that it would come true…. a dream job, good money, an abundance of time, a happy home..    Fulfilling these dreams are not as far off as experiencing them only in your sleep.  It can be a reality if you WILL it, BELIEVE it and ACT TOWARD it. How about doing a good deed like the the saying goes “What goes around, comes around” .  Spreading love, peace and good tidings helps to nurture the returns you will get by doing amazing deeds. But be warned –  because the same is…
